Out of Luck
After a surpisingly good run of luck allowed me to run Labasa on time, I definitely feel like my luck has well and truly run out now. I normally consider myself not the luckiest person going around, but it was definitely on my side on Friday night when Cyclone Damon turned away from Vanua Levu and missed Vorovoro. Obviously, this was a huge piece of good fortune. I was able to catch my flights as I had already booked, and Labasa was spared from flooding and the inevitable destruction that such an intense cyclone would have caused.
Then, due to the prior flight cancellations on Friday, my international flight was fully booked on Sunday (which I should have realised) and there was a strong chance that my excess luggage wouldn't be allowed to fly on the same flight as me. Instead it would have been sent on the next available flight, which happened to be 2 days later. Luckily the chick at the check-in counter was really nice and allowed me to classify my heavy bag, as 'sporting equipment' (due to my camping gear) and i'm sure this was the only reason it was even allowed on the flight. So, after a nervous wait, I picked up both my bags from Nadi and fortunately, didn't have to worry about having to change my domestic flights to wait for my luggage
Once I arrived in Nadi, I got settled in, pulled my laptop out and, what do you know, it doesn't start! It was working perfectly on Sunday morning when I packed it, but by Sunday night, it wouldn't even boot up. I'm hoping like nothing else that I'll be able to get it fixed in Labasa (not holding my breath though), because I'm not really digging the prospect of carrying around a 3kg brick for the rest of my trip. Also not digging the prospect of losing all my programs on the laptop (because i'm not carring backups with me) and photos from my last trip that aren't backed up either. It's definitely going to make life in Fiji a lot harder if I don't have my own laptop, because it's pretty impractical if I have to come down to the internet cafe in Labasa everytime I need to do some work
They say good luck and bad luck evens itseld out if you wait long enough, but given how well prepared I was to use my laptop for work, I definitely would have preferred to have my bad luck happen with my flights and luggage, because a broken laptop could potentially affect my entire trip here, whereas the other two things are momentary inconveniences. Anyway, I'm sure it will sort itself out, I'm just really frustrated at the moment
