Symptoms of altitude - breathlessness everytime you walk anywhere (La Paz is either uphill or downhill) or do anything (including turning over in bed....), dry throat especially at night, snotty most of the time especially at night.
I have to say that I love La Paz. Its this city which seems huge but actually has under 1 million people in it and its stuck in a huge crater at 3,800m in the middle of the Andes. Its so busy and noisy and pretty smelly too but there´s some kind of atmosphere here which I really like. So many markets to wander through and shops to look in and people to look at and food to eat. I´m loving the street stalls for lunch, a saltena (like a cornish pastie but more delicious!) and a fruit shake with everything in it from one of the ladies on the street does me just fine! Found the most amazing place to have breakfast too. Fruit, muesli, yoghurt, scrambled egg, real brown toast, jam & coffee for one pound! Sets me up for the day!
Bolivia is not too happy with its government at the moment (think some of it may have reached the BBC!) and apparently I just missed a massive strike on Tuesday by all the taxi and bus drivers. No traffic anywhere, just lots of people protesting apparently. Good thing to miss I think!
Moved into the El Solario hostel which seemed nice enough. Met Sherry and Naomi, two english girls in my dorm and a german guy called Bjorn who was about to go home and absolute hilarious! Spent the day wandering and booked myself onto a 2 day jungle tour. Only $25 per day so we´ll see what its like. Also flying up to Rurrenbaque for it rather than the bus.... one hour on the plane or 20 hours bouncing around a bus..... hmm twas a tough decision! Also booked myself onto the Death Road Bike Tour (next journal!).
Went and saw San Pedro prison of the book ´Marching Powder´ fame. Was fascinating to see it for real especially after reading the book a few years ago. No gringos allowed in and I was officially supposed to take photos either but no one told me off! If you get the chance, read the book!! Highly recommended.
