Right-oh chaps - exciting update numero dos. Though we're in Belize now, so no more Spanish is necessary, thank God. Silvia would have been so disappointed at my performance (Tom, Dan or Paul insert gag here…)
Playa del Carmen was pretty cool, in a plastic seaside glitz sort of a way. Stayed in a hostel for a few nights and swung in hammocks - when we weren't being bitten to sh1t by mosquitoes. After a few days sitting on the beach (well at least when Zoë wasn't making us walk up and down in an attempt to make me do some exercise), and eating in restaurants where funny little men in tight trousers play accordions we decided to get a bit more adventurous and head down to Tulum to live in a run-down hut on a beach.
Clearly we were never actually going to go for an allotment shed so shelled out for a lovely little beachside cabana on a picturesque little private cove (will upload picture of cove in order to qualify use of the word 'picturesque'), complete with coconut trees, hammocks to swing in, a bar to drink in, and comfy chairs to gaze out over the ocean day and night. We even had some electricity (read: 'rubbish overhead lamp that would have a left a mole groping around for his toothbrush).
Unfortunately this still wouldn't quite cut it. Perhaps it had something to do with the suspended, swinging bed that left us slightly nauseous all day, or the friendly staff (read: 'thieving miserable b*stards'), the ropey bathrooms, nature that was a little too close (Zoë obviously had no problem with this) and rain coming in all night (she did have a slight problem with this as due to the angle it only hit her - which was funny). Anyway we bailed after a couple of sleepless nights to head south to the border. All in all a very rustic and romantic experience.
Much traveling followed, but to cut a long story (and a much longer journey) short, after 12 hours solid on 2 busses (one reasonably nice and modern, one a 50 year old American school bus - slightly less nice and modern), 4 taxis (only 3 of which were necessary but that's another - rather embarrassing - story), and one boat, we arrived in Caye Caulker in Belize.
Now this place really is cool. Small, friendly, laid-back (read 'horizontal') and totally lacking in large groups of loud tourists (trying not to be too xenophobic by omitting word 'American'. Oops, there it is). After some decent food (my stomach really didn't like Mexico - Zoë’s did but then her stomach’s not exactly picky), and a night in an ok hotel we've splurged on a better one (whole Pounds 12.50 a night each), with air-con, cable, a nice bathroom and will now proceed to sit on our a*rse's and eat food for a week. And we may have to do much of it indoors as it's currently p1ssing down.
Still wicked here though and should clear up tomorrow in time for us to go and hug some sharks (don’t panic mother apparently they’re only small and quite friendly).
Take care all.
