This is a picture of the premiere part of Cataratas de Iguazu. In case you don't know its one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. It's the widest waterfall in the world, over a mile wide, with over 250 distinct cascades. It is the second largest in terms of water volume(62,010 cubic ft. per second) after Niagara, which hails in comparison as it is only 1/3 the height of Cataratas. Cataratas is 270 ft high in some places, one of which I believe is this spot, the devils throat, the main cascade of the falls. But obviously the picture cannot do justice to the immensity of this falls. When Eleanor Roosevelt first saw the falls she said "poor Niagara." Lol I wonder where Franklin was? The Indigenous Guarani of Argentina thought that God had made the falls in order to condemn the infidelities described in an ancient Guarani legend between an immortal goddess and a mortal man and they were deathly afraid to cross the river. The river divides Argentina and Brazil and as I was standing among a huge crowd of tourists, many of which were fellow "Yankees" speaking in our atrocious Castellano accents, I looked across to the platform of Brazilian tourists and I wondered if there was another confused Yankee among friends butchering the Portuguese accent from the tourist platform on that side, looking back at me with his crappy digital camera, Hawaiian shirt, mosquito repellent and SPF 125 suncreen thinking the same thing…. In all seriousness, I remember thinking that the river represents not only a physical but a cultural disconnect between two very unique countries, both of which I can now proudly say I have visited. The whole weekend was amazing, worth the 26 hour bus ride without question. We visited the ancient ruins of a Guarani Jesuit mission. I got to zip line 1000 meters through one of the most biologically diverse jungles in the world where I saw monkeys playing in the trees, repel down a waterfall. We went to a animal conservancy where we saw everything from rainbow colored toucans and talking parrots to Capybaras, the worlds largest rodent which looks like a giant guinea pig. And every night we got to eat a giant first class buffet at our hotel where I had some of the best famous Argentine meats I have tried yet! I gorged myself. I cant believe I only have 3 weeks left in Rosario, gotta make every moment count! im about to go to an asado with my friends and celebrate the REELECTION of OBAMA!! Do it Ducks! Chau for now.
