I feel ashamed of myself for actually putting us both through this punishment. An overnight bus to Sucre, 8 hours east of Uyuni on an old clapped out bus, only to arrive in Sucre at 4am in the morning where we would wait 14 hours to board our next overnight bus, all 13 hours of it. We hadn't showered since BEFORE the salt flats tours we had been rationed to a mere baby wipe wash each day and after day three we were getting whiffy.
We spent from 4am to 6pm with nowhere to go, nothing to do and no enthusiasm to come up with many ideas on wasting all this time, we just wanted to be on with the journey. we sat and waited for something to open and try and find a cafe to fill as many hours as possible. The sun finally peeping up we went for a jaunt around the city in really high temperature, resulting in feeling tired and faint. walking through street upon street of 'witch markets' we gave up and found a spot of green to fall asleep on, beneath a shaded tree we stayed there feeling sorry for ourselves until it was almost time to get back to the bus station.
Boarding at 6:30pm on a bus which we would be on for 14hours to realise there was no toilet was not overly pleasing! There were three stops along the way where you can 'go' ...in a bush or a ditch. We had gone through each company trying to find a bus with a loo and not one had one, 14hours with no toilet onboard???!! When we realised that majority of the journey was close to an off road drash we realised why the lack of loo's...and sleep in this case.
So again, after another fun-filled bus ride we reach Santa Cruz, and arrive at the international airport....yes! More travelling, we hadn't made destination touchdown yet. This felt so never-ending. Both on the verge of mild breakdowns we catch a taxi to the airport and check-in to our flight in Rio de Janiero. Beginning to feel a sense of achievement, we were so close. Rio and the eastern side of South America was to be our holiday time, a holiday in a holiday you could call it. We were done with buses, lugging bags for miles and were to chill out a bit more and slow down for the 10 days we had left.
Flying into Rio was fantastic; it was dark landing us at 8pm, so the whole city was lit up. We could see Christ Redeemer, The Sugar loaf, all looked quite exciting and already we couldn't wait to check out the city the following day. Thankfully blessed with a perfect hostel with a great location, our taxi driver even gave us free boiled sweets; this was a good start to our last leg. The traumatizing travel here was paying off, already.
