Trailor on Tour
Hello all, I have finally arrived in The Red Centre, so called because it's red and yep, you guessed it - it's in the centre!
I flew from Perth to Alice yesterday, after having put my CSI skills to the test. A Japanese guy from the hostel had left his passport, wallet and travellers cheques in his car with the door unlocked - not smart really.
The flight was 3 hours and I'm still only halfway across the country. My backpack is now weighing in at 21kg - no wonder I'm suffering from a bad back!
We did get to see Ayers Rock from the plane, but as everyone got up to look out of the windows on the right I thought the plane would tip over! Obviously the fact that it didn't was due to the fact that we had a woman captain!!
First impressions of Alice are not good - it is a complete dive and quite honestly I would not want to walk round here on my own after dark. The hostel is a s*** hole (sorry, but couldn't think of a better way of describing it) and is very run down and not very clean. Anyway, won't be here for long so I guess I'll put up with it!
The Northern Territory is the most barren area of Australia, with 1% of the population inhabiting 20% of the country. Aboriginals own about 50% of the NT, including the National Parks, which are then leased back to the government. The town of Alice was named after the wife of the Superintendent of Telegraphs, Charles Todd. Hence the Todd River flows (or actually is bone dry) through town and there used to be a spring somewhere, so therefore Alice Springs! Fascinating, don't you agree?!
Planning on booking a 2 day tour to Ayers Rock and King's Canyon in the next couple of days and I will definitely be opting for the air conditioned facilities as it was 39 degrees yesterday.
Until then S xx
