So from Perth to Sydney to catch up with Kathryn and Sam. I worked with Kathryn in Vancouver and went to Australia last year for her 30th birthday. Kathryn was not able to get any time off work so I made an unplanned trip to Canberra. Canberra is the capitol of Australia and I had not toured Canberra in the past. I was not really sure if it was a city I would enjoy. I thought that being a "government" town and the city would be very snobbish. As it turned out this was definitely not the case.
The first day I went to the War Memorial and the second day to Parliament House. I was pleasantly surprised by both. The War Memorial was great and if I had more time I could have spent the whole day there. I did spend over 3 hours and only saw the WWI section and an exhibition called "Love and War".
In Canberra there are two parliament houses. The new one was opened in 1988 and it is pretty spectacular. The members of parliament were not there so it was very quiet. If parliament was sitting I could have attended question period but parliament didn't resume until Tuesday May 11th. They had been off for 7 weeks. Must be nice to be a member of parliament.
Wednesday morning I hopped a bus back to Sydney (3 hours) and then a flight to Brisbane to catch up with Dean and Sharon. I had not spoken to Dean in 13 years. After tracking him down on Facebook in November last year we agreed to wait until we met to catch up. We talked none stop from the time Dean picked me up until we turned the lights out at 1AM. Dean, Sharon and I went out for dinner after driving down the coast to see the "Gold Coast" and "Surfers Paradise". The amount of money that is in this area is staggering. I reminded me a lot of Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
So it is Friday (May 7) morning and I am on another plane back to Sydney before heading to Hawaii to catch up with Tara and Karla for three nights.
Catch up with you all soon.
