After a nice visit with friends in Wake Forest, North Carolina, we spent nearly a whole day on the road driving on boring highways towards Washington D.C. Yesterday evening we made it to the capital, and checked in at another roadside motel about 15 km from downtown Washington. Had a quick bite to eat and went to bed. At about half past one at night we were woken up by the motel fire alarm going off. Gathering the important stuff (including the half asleep kids) we were told by the guard to go outside. The fire brigade came, but most likely didn´t find fire, since they left again a while after, and we were allowed in the building again and could go back to sleep.
In the morning, after a couple of hours of homework time and breakfast, we were off to see the city. We started out with some of the must-sees, like the white house and the World War 2 memorial place. The White House we only saw from the outside, since you apparently have to sign up for the inside tour a couple of days before. And since we only stay for a few days, we don´t have time to see it all. After some delicious sushi lunch near chinatown, we went to the museum of natural history. A huge museum, where you can learn about pretty much everything from butterflies and bugs to mammals, dinosaurs and evolutional theory. A really nice thing here is that all the museums are free of charge.
Washington D.C is a huge city with a lot to see, but very stream-like with a funny mixture of old, pretty architecture side by side with modern buisness like high-modern buildings. Tomorrow I think We´ll do the obligatory tourist route with the double-decker buses - with the camera´s hanging from our necks and a map in our hands and all :-)
The days seem to be way too short though. After the museum, we drove back to the motel, had some computer time, and then went out to find something to eat. We ended up in an afghani restaurant. Nice food, cosy place. All in all the food hasn´t been all that great - mostly junk - very greasy - very american.
