Tom Round the World 2006
MALAYSIA (27/3 - 18/4)
After a very wet and fed up few days in Krabi we set off on the 10 hour journey to Georgetown on the north west coast of Malaysia. Our journey to the border was less than interesting in a crampt minibus but is was good to be getting away from the thunderstorms and I had an air of anticipation about Malaysia, the stories we had heard from fellow travellers suggested to me it was going to be amazing.
Georgetown (27/3 - 29/3)
We arrived in Georgetown about 7pm, our minibus dumped us on a main road 10 minutes walk from the main street. We wandered through a few seedy backstreets to our hostel. Outside the hostel was a restaurant with a live band. The band looked like a group of mexicans singing songs such as "I shot the sheriff" till the early hours. The band kept us entertained for the evening. Next day we went for a wander round the town, famous for an old british fort. It was unbearably hot, 40 degrees. The town was very nice, old colonial architecture etc, but im not into that so we decided that one day was enough and we booked our tickets to the Cameron Highlands for the next day to cool off. Next day 8am start for a 5 hour bus journey to Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands.
Cameron Highlands (29/3 - 2/4)
We arrived in Tanah Rata at 3pm, a small town 2000m plus in altitude. Finally after over 2 months we had arrived somewhere where the temperature was less than 30 degrees. We found a nice hostel on the hillside, fathers guest house that served English meals. After tucking into a cream tea we settled down to watch the March of the Penguins, most enjoyable. The next day we booked a tour of the local area, visting the junglehe local tea planttions. The Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's most important tea growing area, the perfect place for a tea drinker like me. The BOH tea plantation we visited did not disappoint, their premium tea was the best cup of tea I have ever had and didnt even need milk. They dont sell it in the UK so I sent some home. The town we were staying in was surrounded by jungle so we went off to explore on some of the trails over the nexty two days. Fortunately we didnt get lost and managed to pay a visit to a few more of the tea plantations. After 4 fantastic days in the Cameron Highlands we decided it was time to move on.
Taman Negara National Park (2/4 - 4/4)
It took 7 hours to travel the 200 miles or so from the Cameron Highlands to Taman Negara on the Jungle roads.
