Hey, elise here, Ive been assigned the task of writing about Saigon, however considering we've been a bit slack on the blog front it was quite some time ago and therefore is a bit difficult! We arrived in Saigon on the overnight train, this time we were'nt in first class with four people in a tiny room, we were in second class with six people in a tiny cabin! Tom was on the top bunk and i was on the bottom. The bunks were so small that you couldnt even sit up in them! The matresses were also possibly harder than concrete. Luckily we had brought silk sleeping bags so we didnt have to sleep on the gross matress! The toilets on the train were quite disgusting and considering it was our third train trip we had figured out that it was best to go at the start of the terp and not at the end when it was definantly better to hold on! We arrived in Saigon very early in the morning so Trong organised a trip to the Mekong Delta for us which wasnt normally in the itinerary. It took us about 2 hours to get there by bus and then we hoped on a boat, we stopped off at an island to watch a traditional performance of sing and dance which was great... for the first song! thhhen we hopped back on the boat and went to another island and saw how they made coconut candy which was really yummy. There was also a big jar of snake wine which Trong was trying to get people to drink, it had 12 different snakes in it and a bird. Tom being the easily peer-pressured one had a go along with a few others. It really was quite disgusting! Then we went to another island and had the opportunity to put a python around our necks (no thankyou)... again Tom went for it, the funniest thing was that they had a cage with a few guinea pigs in it and they were getting their last meal! We then hopped on horse and carts which were rather horrible as the horses looked really unwell, and to add to it, there was a tiny puppy on the cart i went on, so i was holding it and looking after it. When we stopped i called Martha over who is actually a vet, she said that it would have been about 2-3 weeks old. It was so sad! Then we got Trong to ask the woman whether it was her pet and she said yes it was a horse dog.... and we were all like ???????what??? and then she proceeded to put the puppy under the horse, attatch it to the horses nipple and squeeze milk into the puppies mouth.... It was probably on eof the most bizzare things ive ever seen! Then i had to say goodbye to the little puppy and we moved on to little canoes which we rode through the bamboo and reeds to the big boat once again. We then stopped off for lunch which was an experience in itself. We turned up and there were whole fish on the table which the women proceeded to skin and deflesh which was really gross. The rest of the food was equally gross. Then we headed back down the delta to the bus and headed back to Saigon and the hotel for a much needed sleep! :)
