In Cancun we unexpectedly experienced rain for the first time since the torrential downpour in Savannah, Georgia (when Tom fell into a puddle up to his knee). The Mexican rain lasted all of about 10 minutes and for us English really was quite a pathetic site to behold. It gave us an excuse to take shelter under the Golden Arches of MacDonald's and to order dinner of Big Macs and fries. There's nothing like eating locally is there? However we were unable to pay and had to suffer the shame of having to leave MacDonald's to find a functioning ATM so that we could pay for our feast.
The reason we were so keen to dine in MacDonald's was because on our first night in the hostel we tried to cook a carbonara in the hostel kitchen. However the hobs were so weak that it took two hours to cook the pasta, by which time it had been reduced to a truly horrific soggy pasta-type slime. Honestly, it would have been quicker to cook over the heat of a cigarette!
Also staying at the hostel were two Argentine girls. Obviously the Falkland Islands were discussed and we all amicably agreed to disagree. Several beers to the good later, we were discussing learning languages at school with them and when one of them said that they are taught English in Argentinian schools but they are unable to practice it anywhere, Tom piped up with "Well I know one place you can go to practice". Can you see where this is heading? Tom's hilarious joke was greeted with an awkward silence, filled by his own laughter and that of Olly, an Englishman who was also staying at the hostel and who agreed that Tom's joke, while clearly hilarious, perhaps could have been aimed at a more appropriate audience.
Another classic moment happened when we were discussing things to do in and around Cancun with a Mexican girl who was also staying at the hostel. She was trying to convince us to go to the Chichen Itza archaeological site and she bafflingly chose to convince us by saying "I don't know much about your travels but it sounds like you haven't done much in Mexico, so you should definitely go to Chichen Itza. After all, when you're travelling you have to do the best things regardless of how much they cost"!?! It's worth noting that this girl was on holiday for two weeks (while her divorce was going through we might add, rather b****ily…). We did not go to Chichen Itza.
The rest of our time in Cancun was spent either in the water or hammocks or drinking beer that wasn't Corona. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any groups of American youths on Spring Break (had we seen them Tom feels sure they would have been chanting U-S-A, U-S-A).
