Good morning sports fans!
Its been a while so i thought id better post a journal to keep things ticking over. Actually, im not to great with all this writing lark, too much like hard work and my typing is rubbish!
Anyways, we are in Kuala Lumpur at the minute. Since my last journal we have been busy bunnies indeed!
Singapore is sooo much fun! What an amazing place. It really is ridiculously clean and modern. We got lost in a fair few shopping malls but had fun doing it! Unfortunately we also found things a little expensive for our liking, cheap for the UK (hey everything is) but expensive in the context of what we are trying to do. We spent 3 days there wandering and having a really good laugh but then we bailed before we gave in to the temptation of all the window shopping!
The night safari was really good. Howz about being just centimetres away from a massive bat, wings spread (fangs dripping! lol) and staring straight at you?? amazing! And yes, we did get to Raffles for the customary Singapore sling!
After beating a hasty retreat we headed into Malaysia and to a tiny island off the east coast called Tioman. The ferry trip was a bit rough (a bit too rough for one of us!) but was more than worth it. how does 5 nights of island paradise sound? Beaches, coral, rainforest. I nearly trod on a snake during our one day of meaningful activity and the monkeys were a tad on the aggressive side. I did my best not to laugh out loud at the Aussie chick who was p!ssed cos a monkey had pinched her stuff. haha! We also had teeny kittens lounging around our wooden hut, as well as loads of butterflies and the odd lizard (the two foot jobbies mind, not the tiddlers we saw in India!). Oh and i nearly didnt mention the biggest flippin spider i have ever seen, jumping out of my rucksack and nearly having my arm off! I'm all still here though so i can laugh about it now! (I wasn't scared really!).
I got lobster-fried too. Unfortunately, I found out first hand just how photo sensitive these malaria pills make you! I'm im the peeling stage now so ive got serious 'shoulder dandruff' going on. Nice.
KL has been a blast too. Very, very humid but we got out and about and have managed most of the things we wanted to do. We went up the twin towers today but it was a touch overcast so the photos of that are not great. Elsewhere im turning into a reet snapper, im not entirely comfortable doing the whole touristy thing but the pics I have alreadt accumulated more than make up.
And yes, they will be on the website soon, i promise!
So, off further north tomorrow. Georgetown next for a quick stop off, then on to Thailand. More beach holidays await!
Some quick thoughts:
This backpacking lark is hard work at times. Its been pretty hard getting used to having your life 'up in the air' and not having things planned more than a few days in advance. Its a fun life, but very different. Thankfully, im having too much fun to dwell on this point too much.
I dont miss home at all yet really. I dont think either of us do. Most days are go, go, go and we dont have time to think about it. In quieter moments, usually if i cannot sleep, I do confess to missing family and friends sure, but you know what, all of a sudden, a year really doesn't seem that long at all.
Lessons learned:
Toilet roll is a commodity more valuable than gold. steal it wherever possible and always carry a roll for emergencies.
If a coach trip is scheduled for 7 hours, the driver will do it in 5 and a half. You will pull that really embarrasing "i am going to die!" face at least five times during said trip.
(Tom and row are 2 coach trips and not out yet!)
M&M's are called Nips.
A few questions still to be answered:
can Row spell Kuala Lumpur or Malaysia? How many subtitles is it possible to get on one cinema screen (3 is the current record)? Is it possible for Thailand to be any cheaper than Malaysia? Will my legs ever get brown? did that man eating spider beasty follow us from Tioman? Will I ever finish reading 'a book'? What is Wartel STD? Is it better than a normal STD? How many times does the promo video for the twin towers mention the fact that it is the tallest building in the world? (which it is, in every respect apart from that it is not)
All will be revealed in the coming episodes of your favourite globe trotting duo!
And finally, the following thought occurred to me (in a quieter moment, i hasten to add). In Singapore, it is illegal to not flush the toilet after yourself (no sh!t, excuse the pun!). Most toilets are automatic flush. What happens if your toilet is faulty???
Keep smiling.
Tom.
