BTW, you can check out www.offexploring.com/rayborja for the photos that Ray uploaded from Switzerland. Pretty cool, huh?
Today was interesting because it was a lazy day wandering around by local train and the occassional walk---no long intense hikes. David left in the morning, so I was alone after that. The people watching was great especially from a cafe in Manarola.
Apparently Rick Steves has pretty much promoted the heck out of Vernazza. Each time I visited it was jam packed with tourist groups. I'm not quite sure why that is the crown jewel of Cinque Terre according to several guidebooks. For those in the know, it's also the place I dreamed about. For the two days and a half I've spent meandering, my conclusion is the promenade of Monterosso, strolling muscians, great piazza life and lively nightlife is the place. Manarola is also a favorite during the day because it's least crowded and there is just a great energy to it.
The hike a dusk around to the north of Monterosso was extraordinary. In the evening light I could see all 5 "terre" (villages). It was magical with a walk back to the town. The bonus was a beautiful classical violin player in the tunnel back to the village. Let's just say it was magnificently moving.
What I have found on this trip is I very much enjoy the silence of a remote hike. Switzerland has certainly been the surprise treat and I guarantee I will return to show a few people around.
