We left Phuket on Saturday night on the night bus which takes about 14 hours and is only 500 baht (10pounds) and arrived early sunday morning with little sleep but happy to finally have time to get really excited about our holiday. We booked our bus tickets for the following day to Cambodia and then headed to Khao San Road, the main backpacking area of Bangkok. This was my third time to Bangkok and I enjoy it more and more each time. A large, crazy, dirty city that often smells, although I seem to have become immune to it because I didn't notice it this time, Bangkok really is a place you either love or hate. After getting breakfast from our fruitshake man we caught up with George and Lol who were staying at the same hotel as us and then we went our separate ways for the day.
Tim and I walked along the river for a bit watching the locals picnicing in the parks, fishing in the canals and trying to escape the heat under the shade of the trees before we caught a taxi to Siam Square - shoppers paradise! It took us an hour to get their due to the traffic despite the fact that it was 2pm on a Sunday. Five floors of Louis Vuitton, Hermes etc made me never want to leave but Tim dragged me out and we caught the sky train, basically the same as the London tubes but with airconditioning and amazing views of the city, and explored some of the side streets filled with quirky shops and food stalls.
We eventually found our way to Wat Pho which is the oldest and largest temple in Bangkok with a reclining Buddha, 46m long and 15m high. The whole place was absolutely stunning and we spent ages walking around taking pics and watching the sunset before heading back to Khao San Road to have dinner with George and Lol. After some really cheap thai food and a few card tricks we walked around Khao San before ending up at one of the balcony bars with live music for a few drinks and lots of people watching. We said goodbye to George and Lol at about 1am, a relatively early night for Khao San, as we had a very early bus to catch the next day. While Tim and I are travelling around Cambodia and Vietnam, George and Lol are travelling through Thailand and we are all meeting up again for a week in Laos at the end of April. Can't wait!!
