Friday 27th June
We woke up this morning and decided that we would head straight to Berat as we were on abit of a time crunch and Tirana didn't offer as much as some of the other places we were hoping to visit. So we heaved on our backpacks and took the 20 minute walk to the bus station. We hopped on a bus as soon as we arrived and the journey South began, every half an hour or so the bus stopped for more passengers or just to have a chat with someone....it was going to be a long ride....3 hours. It could not come soon enough, these weren't really roads, but more dirt tracks that winded around the mountains. We all the bumps and dips and winding we both felt nauseous when we arrived in Berat and we wasn't disapointed, the ottoman style was apparent in the houses that lined the hilltops and the cobbled streets, we crossed over the footbridge and headed up to berat backpackers.
The views as we got higher were amazing, you could easily spend a few days here chilling and taking it all in.
We dropped of our stuff in the room )A double private room, we couldnt resist it was beautiful and only cost 4euros extra. Wanting to make a start we made our way up the opposite hill were there was an castle to visit. The small towns main attraction and now a Unesco site. We ventured up the stead hill with an icecream for comfort ....this was an unusually castle as people still live inside, It was cool to walk around and take in the views, The town is known as the city of windows and it is clear to see when you look down on the town. Although we didn't know much about the history of the castle as we had declined the one eyed guide at the entrance causing an arguement between him and his also one eyed mother. ....we could google it later. On the walk down we trod carefully as the cobbles were so slippery and the hill so steap. We saw a tortoise, but unsure at first if this was a pet or wild. We later found out that they do have rare tortises here. We grabbed a pizza to share as we were both starving and then headed back to the hostel to relax and soak it all up. We finished the evening off with a home cooked meal at the backpackers and a few drinks with all the other backpackers. About 15 of us got merry and chatted until about 1am in the morning. Mark tried a Raki and was soon making stupid comments and looking slightly worse for wear, so I took him off to bed as we had planned to get the early bus tomorrow.
