Within 15 minutes of leaving camp we were at the border crossing. Completed with relative ease, including watching the local cattle on the Ugandan side keep the lawn in check. It took about an hour including the truck being searched by the Rwandan customs police (plastic bags are illegal) and 3 of our truckers having to get visas.
Rwanda is beautiful, known as the land of thousands of hills. Rwanda is an hour behind Uganda, so we gained an hour of time - however we're only here for one night and tomorrow when we cross into Tanzania we lose an hour.
It took 2.5 hours to drive 90km to Kigali due to the winding roads up and down. We picked up two people travelling together, one from NZ and one from Aus.
Lunch was had in the car park of the Genocide Memorial which we then had two hours to look through. Very interesting exhibitions, both about the history that led to the genocide in 1994 and the history of human genocide shown through the last 120+ years in countries/ communities around the world. Tessa & I both found it an intense and somber afternoon. Neither of us understand how quickly large groups of humanity can be moved to commit atrocities against one another and how difficult it is to get the masses to take positive action for themselves and others.
Tonight we begin 8 nights in a row of staying only one night in each site as we move across Tanzania to get to Zanzibar. The hostel is part of a social enterprise where young locals are trained in customer services and what is required to run a good cafe or hostel.
