India has been wildly different to what I was expecting…the food wasn't as delicious as I was hoping, the weather was stifling hot and the driving has been mental! If I hear another car horn beep beep beeping I think it will be too soon!!!!
We began our India leg of the journey in Amritsar after we crossed the Pakistan/India border and headed out to the Golden Temple, this place was amazing! It is a place of pilgrimage for Hindu people and is beautiful, relaxing and so tranquil. We went inside when the sun had set and everyone was praying and chanting…an unreal place. The next day we headed to the capital Delhi. I was expecting a really modern city but it wasn't at all. There were people sleeping on the streets, beggars everywhere and just didn't find it to be a nice place to look at. However we did get a local man pretty much pick us up on the street and take us on a driving tour of the city, nice to get a 'real' local to show us the sights and tell us about himself and his family. One of the highlights of the day was Raj Ghat which is a memorial site for Gandhi…except we burnt our feet off as you can't wear shoes in these types of things! I could be a professional fire walker by the end of the trip with the 45 degree heat we have had to run over!! Delhi is also the place to see monkeys everywhere, they run wild over the city and can be pretty aggressive….my friend Mel had one jump onto her and try to rip her trousers off before a local shooed it away!
The best thing in India has to be the Taj Mahal….a wonder of the world and a wonder of the trip so far! I was so excited to go there and it was amazing. Afterwards we went to a marble factory and seeing how they make it with all the patterns shows you how much effort went into the Taj....love love loved it!!! The final part of our India journey (before we fly out after Nepal) was Varanasi. Another very spiritual place for Hindu people, we went for a sunrise and sunset boat ride along the Ganges River. It was so peaceful yet surreal with dead bodies being burnt on fires along the edge. People come here when they are going to die and once they are cremated they are then guaranteed to go to heaven. Not particularly nice to look at, or breathe in!
Next stop Nepal….time for adventure activities and a chill out!
