Hiya! Journal is back on me ducks!
The lovely people at STA have also changed their web site a bit and it now allows me to add things like: - good eh?!
Well since leaving Melbourne (which really felt more like leaving home than actually leaving home did!) We've flown up to Darwin. Stupidly, I allowed Simon the responsibility of our tickets and we nearly missed the flight! Simon had assured me that our flight left Melbourne at 8pm - he called me, frantic, at about 5pm to announce that he'd got in a muddle and the flight actually left at 6.30pm. We were half way to the airport in Marks's wreck of a Holden Commodor with Sean in the passenger seat in his slippers and me in the back still stuffing things into my backpack when Simon confessed that, in the rush to leave the house he hadn't had chance to look at the tickets and he wasn't even sure we were headed for the right airport! We managed to get on the plane through the skin of our teeth though so alls well that ends well.
We landed in Darwin around midnight - it was 27 degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We've been hot and bothered ever since and my hair is out of control but it's all very beautiful - Darwin that is, not my hair. We had a day being complete geeks and did the Lonely Planet's walking tour of Darwin - which actually turned out to be really interesting, especially when Simon took on the role of over-bearing tour guide. We spent the following day in Kakadu National Park where we climbed Ubirr Rock (a very sweaty affair - I'm SO unfit!). We had a cruise down the Yellow River and got a bit too close to the crocs for comfort and looked at aboriginal rock paintings and learned lots about the ancient aboriginal culture - every day is a school day!
It's a stunning place and we've had an ace few days. Being back in dorms and putting up with hostel kitchens took a bit of readjusting to but we're well and truely back on the road now!
