The Wandering Rupa
We are in the mountains of Central Malaysia, Cameron Highlands which is known for growing strawberries, tea, fruits, vegetables, flowers & honey farms. It is positively cold up here, and the mist swirls around the hills and valleys a bit like England. There's even Tudor arcitechture and English food on the menus which is a huge disappointment when you're looking forward to a 'real' cream tea!
We are staying in an old French monastery, built by the French Foriegn Mission to house monks learning and meditating here. It is so beautiful, with steep gardens, long winding stairways and moss covered stone. Rose bushes and cedars are all around. Peaceful. And cold. We finally have a hot shower. I need to wear socks for the first time!
The emergence of Islam has meant that Christian efforts are on the wane here (Malaysia is 95% Muslim, only 4% Christian now) so there is only one monk left here. We haven't seen him yet. There's still an active chapel in the basement. Across the valley is a Convent, but again, it is disused and now houses only a school. The English held a military base next door, but when they pulled troops out, they signed it all over to the monks, including barracks.
