Border crossings can be tedious to endure. On our way from Kenya to Uganda we were sitting on the bus smiling and waving at children on the roadside at every opportunity (a regular little routine) when we arrived at the border crossing. It was hanging around waiting to leave the Ugandan offices and hit the road again when we noticed a group of schoolkids congregating beside their bus. After a few shy smiles and waves we went to the window to have a chat.
The apparent leader of the group introduced herself as Sharon and asked so politely "May I know your name?". We introduced ourselves and got chatting. As it turns out, Sharon was 13 and in 8th Form: an important milestone as it signalled the end of her elementary schooling and transition into post-compulsory high school. She and her peers (one of which insisted on posing like a gangster) were visiting from Kenya on a trip - a bit of fun and a holiday as she put it. It was lovely getting to know a little about her and - after a few quickly snapped photos of the posse - we said our goodbyes and wished them well. What a nice way to break up a dawn-to-dusk travel day.
