The Simple Life
We had decided to fly to Kuala Lumpur from Koh Samui. A tad more expensive but 24 hours on a bus was not very appealing! Got the boat over to the airport and were slightly worried that we were 8 days over our visa. We had been assured we would only be asked to pay a fine but never the less with the probability of jail looming it was still a tense time!
Before we got any further we have to tell you a little thai saying so you understand our next story. "same same but different" is a reference on a million t-shirts and mouths to describe the ladyboys. Hope you get it, common sense should prevail - think about it, they're the same same (as women) but different!
Anyway, we were made to sit at a seperate desk at passport controls to fill out forms and pay our fine. We felt like guilty drug smugglers and the fact that every other person in the queue was eyeing us suspiciously didn't help! Rather than acting like sensible, innocent grown-ups we giggled hysterically throughout. When asked to confirm our ages, both 27 (I know we don't look it!) the officer looked at us and said "same same" to which we responded "but different" in tandem. We were laughing so much by this point we had to practically be scraped off the floor. The officers were none too impressed let us tell you.......
After an hours delay which is actually pretty reasonable for Thailand we were ferried out to a toy aeroplane - 42 seats, propellers. Think it did us proud in the 1st World War! We did panic slightly, it had started raining and we thought we were in for a very bumpy ride. It was very noisy but comfortable enough and not as bad as we thought. Only 2 and a half hours of being thrown about the sky, after some of the death rides we'd had!
Its amazing how much we appreciate the smaller things in life now. We actually got very excited when we sat in a proper car for the first time in weeks! That was nothing compared to our delight when we fell into bed at our hotel that night. OH MY GOD! We now know what heaven is like. It was 10pm when we arrived at the hotel so we popped out for a chinese take-away and ate in our luxury hotel room with the TV and soft beds.
Slept until 10 the next morning, got up for breakfast, went back to bed and slept until 2pm that afternoon! We didn't want to move for the whole time we were in Kuala Lumpur but thought we better venture out and see some of the sights! Having not read a guidebook we really only knew of the twin towers. Apologies to our parents its probably not recommended but we wandered aimlessly about KL for a bit (well actually in a few big circles!). We eventually gave in and got a taxi to the towers. After weeks of Thai Markets we got a bit carried away with a proper shopping mall and decided to return that evening and make a few purchases! We got caught up in the street market outside our hotel and bought lovely leather bags and more accessories before heading back to the towers. We decided it was necessary we have black dress shoes for Oz!!
The Sky Bridge viewing platform at the towers was closed so we returned the following morning. It was relatively tame compared to the Sky Hotel in Bangkok, only half the floors up! Still we got an excellent view of KL and took some fab photos. We made it back to the hotel to check out by the skin of our teeth. With our backpacks slightly heavier we staggered to reception and Lynne accidentally brushed off some fresh paint, oops!!
We stumbled to the bus station to head to Singapore.
