Hue - a bit of a wash-out…
Leaving Ninh Binh behind I set off on my way to Hue to meet back up with Cords, who'd been in Sapa. I was a day ahead but was confident that historic Hue would have enough on offer to keep me entertained…
Arriving early in the morning after a chilly and bumpy sleeper bus ride, I trudged across a bridge in the rain to my hostel - the very cheery and welcoming Hue Backpackers Hostel. The signs were good; friendly people, yummy banana pancakes and 5 Lonely Planet-recommended restaurants on the same street. Little did I realise that eating is pretty much all there is to do in Hue!
It poured down all day, so pac-a-mac at the ready I decided to go and explore, and pick up a few bits en route. Bad plan… the shops didn't sell anything useful like headphones, the locals were that annoying hassling kind that shout at you on the street, and everyone agreed that although the hostel was fun, it really was too cold and wet to do much. The girls I'd met in Ninh Binh arrived the next morning and we set off to see the historical landmarks. Walking around the ancient citadel took us about 3 hours, we were shattered! Other than some tanks, more Communist flags and some somewhat unexciting old buildings there really was nothing to see so we treated ourselves to a massage and watched The Dark Knight in our hotel - I know, non-stop glamour in Hue huh?!
When Cords arrived in the rain, we agreed to make a swift exit and head straight for Hoi An - the Great Escape was never more apt!
