Will's first blog The day we landed in Sydney Australia, after a 4 hour flight from Christchurch NZ, I was still worried about the little bean I had in my backpack from the Amazon and worried that customs might find it. Its my lucky bean. We went through immigration and they had to wash my boots cos it was full of mud. Luckily we dropped our tent and camping equipment otherwise that wouldve been a right palava. We didn't see any camera crews filming for the Oz show 'Border Control'. We hopped on a shuttle to our hostel which was named the jolly swagman. It wasn't very jolly and we knew we didn't like it the moment we arrived. It was very noisy and the owner looked like a guy whos been slapped by a fish. The neighbourhood is famous for being the red light district. One night Emma went to the toilet in the hostel and disappeared for an hour,so after waiting for an hour(bit of quiet time) I go out and find Emma in the corridor talking to this old lady. She lives in the hostel for 3 or 4 weeks on end and she loves talking. She took a shine to Emma. Her name is Margaret and she's originally from Southampton and now resides on the Gold Coast. She invited us back for some wine she collects from the hostel people when they leave. First thing we noticed was this freaky looking bird. Not a sheila but a bird with a big beak. Basically an enormous pigeon scavenging for food, called an ibis. So off we went to the botannical gardens on the way to the city. We saw some lovely trees there and hundreds of bats hanging and flying in pure daylight. Flying foxes. We went on a free city walking tour where one of us got lost. The trouble started over some free milkshakes. First of all we grabbed two each and then we walked past the truck again and I filled my bag right up boy-o. I took 12. I stopped to put them in my bag and the tour group + Emma was gone like a candle in the wind. So I went back to the meeting place to wait for Emma because we were going to watch the Wales semi-final after the tour. When I realised Emma weren't gonna come back I walked back to the hostel which involved 2 hours walking. When we both found eachother we went to the cheap pub to watch the game. Emma told me to leave that free stuff alone. We were surprised how many german and french nationals there were, looking for work. It started to drive me crazy, it was all you could hear, people looking for jobs. Bloody jobs. Everyday listening to claude and hans about them still looking for a job!!! We went to Taronga Zoo one day. We saw kangaroos, wallabies, platypus, koalas, wombats, tasmania devils, elephants, gorillas. The kangaroos were massive and they were just relaxing in the sun, spread out. They had a massive silverback gorilla and we watched the gorillas when they got fed. Emma finally got to see a penguin up close. That was a really good day and we spent the whole day there with a lekker packed lunch consisting of onions, cheese and mayo. That was our lunch for 2 months in New Zealand and Australia. We went to the Sydney Opera House and we did a bit of jetboating which was amazing but I got soaked like a wet chicken. With Bruce the dude, typical Ozzie Bruce. By this time we had enough of Sydney and we moved on to greener pastures so off we went on tiger airways to Melbourne. Emma wanted to go to the Neighbours set and I wanted to go to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. At Ramsey Street Emma was running around like a lunatic and I was unable to control the Boy-o. We went around the set, playing with the props and they even gave us a Ramsey Street sign which everybody loved. The driver had a strange twitch in her eye. She didn't like my New Zealand top I was wearing. But I was just happy that New Zealand beat Australia in the rugby. We were very disappointed not to meet any stars and they didn't have any particularly good souvenirs either. But everybody was amazed at how small Ramsey Street was in real life, just a small cul de sac. We went to the MCG afterwards and it was raining a lot so we decided to wait a bit in the tourist info centre. We found a butter chicken curry in the street for 8 dollars which we scoffed down like two hobos. We had a nice walk along the river to the MCG when the rain stopped. It was a dream come true and I loved it Boy-o. The stadium which houses 95,000 at capacity is the biggest stadium i've ever been to and is a very historical building. Plus I got a free newspaper. We also spent a day on St Kilda beach, lying on the beach, tanning. Emma got attacked by flies - i couldn't see any of them but we had to move from where we were lying lekker on the grass to where we had to sit down on some concrete. We also went to Nandos which was a highlight cos we misses our food we do's. And we watched the Rugby World Cup Final at the pub where we had to walk to for 40 minutes because Australia didn't show much of the rugby after they got their asses kicked. On our last day we met Dan. Luckily I saved up my vouchers for buy one get one free guinness cos everything is so expensive. After downing two pints we had to run for our airport shuttle. The airport shuttle guy asked where we were going and Emma said 'the airport' so I quickly had to rectify the situation and tell him the international departures. That was Australia. Definiteely the most expensive country I've ever been to, including the Uk. It will bleed you dry boy-o. I was happy to leave cos I knew we were gonna live like kings in Vietnam.
