The Wandering Hedgehog
Just a quick message, I'm here as last-minute decision so I don't have my assembled cables to transfer my own pictures from my phone/camera.
Having met up with the group I'll be travelling with (led by Sam, a.k.a. JC because of his uncanny resemblance to a certain Mr Christ, although I don't think Jesus smoked). I'm the only Scot, apart from Sam there are two English people (living in Australia), three Kiwis, two Irish, two American, one Canadian (living in Korea) and one person from the Netherlands. The age range is mid-20s to late-50s, with most people hovering just over the 30 mark. Suits me fine, I'm still kind-of young by those standards...
It's a great group of people, and I look forward to spending the next month with them. If only to see who cracks first and kills someone else.
We took the night train to Chiang Mai last night, and it was great watching the lightning flashing over the countryside as you heard the rain hammering off the train's roof. It was certainly better than not being able to sleep because the bunk was very small.
Chiang Mai is a bit like Bangkok, but it's much cleaner and friendlier. Today most of us elected to go riding on elephants - the bruises from holding on for dear life will probably take a while to go away, we were told to "farten our seatbelts" but there were no seatbelts to farten). After that it was a spot of bamboo rafting, which was equally good fun (although not for the Irish contingent, who were tipped into the water and attracted leeches and snakes).
Must go now, we've been wandering around the night market (I just finally bought a new wallet!) after dinner and some alcohol - Chang beer rules, it's 6.4% and comes in 630ml bottles. Some of our contingent went to the Thai Kickboxing, but that didn't particularly appeal to me, so I'm going to meet them soon in a bar to watch some world cup nonsense. I'll do a proper update from Laos in the next few days, once I remember to bring all the cables I need to stick my own photos in here!
