Hi from Vientiene!
We last blogged in Luang Prabang before heading to the infamous Vang Vieng. After a pretty uneventful but very beautiful bus journey, we arrived in VV where we headed straight to our guesthouse which had an amazing view of the limestone castes across the river. Explored that evening and decided against having dinner in one of the friends restaurants (they just show friends episodes over and over again, wierd!).
The next day we headed out over the river to a caste that you could climb to the top of for views over the country. We stopped in a cave along the way before climbing up some very rickety bamboo laddders and up some steep boulders to the top. In the afternoon, we hired a moped and drove out to the organic Mulberry farm for lunch. We tried to get over the river to explore the villages but bad roads changed our minds. After dropping off the ped, we headed out for a few drinks with the monsters, which is what the Laos people call the westerners who go to Vang Vieng for tubing and drinking.
Next day we joined the monsters again for tubing!! Basically you hire a tractor inner tube, get dropped off three kilometers up the Nham Song river and float back to town with various drinks in hand. As soon as we got in our tubes we were instantly fished out again by a guy dressed as superman who had jumped in to the river when he saw us coming and dragged us over to his bar where Eddie went for a free whiskey shot. A few beers later we had made it a couple of hundred meters down river and had avoided the fishing lines that were being thrown to us to make us stop for more drinks. The highlight of the day (and maybe the whole trip) was Eddie finding an unopened beer floating past us...it was fate! Our last bar stop had us partying with a group of chinese tourists who were doing the macarena and mooning each other, very strange. We didnt have much money left but the barman told us 'It's Laos, it's ok' and put two beers on the bar before pointing us in the direction of the slingshot which was fun.
We caught the bus to the capital Vientiene the next day. Have explored the town which is very quiet and relaxed, went for a swim this morning and planning on getting out to the Budda park tommorow.
