Day 63 -Hong Kong - Sunday 18th December 2011
Lazy last day in Hong Kong, with Ad still feeling ill, we just wondered around the markets, the park and the streets and took in the final sights of Hong Kong. Kowloon Park is the best park in Hong Kong and its right opposite where we were staying and today it had a local market in it and small shows. We watched some local kids dance to music dressed as a Chinese dragon about 15 kids long, it was great to watch and we got some really good photos too. Come evening, we went for dinner at the Michelin star restaurant Din Tai Fung; we'd seen it on the internet and couldn't believe that the average price for a normal main meal was £12 each?!! It stated on the internet site that for years it has sold the best Dim Sum in Hong Kong and was awarded a Michelin star in 2009 - however the warning was that you may have queue. We arrived at about 7pm, after Adam had spent about an hour looking at Rolex's in the high street. When you arrive you get given a menu and a ticket, the ticket is your number for when you will be seated, then you're told to stand outside the restaurant. Once you've chosen what you want from the extremely colourful menu, you get a pen and tick next to what you want. Adam was thinking "Standing in the street ordering your food, Michelin star are you sure?" Anyway, after about 20mins our number came up and we were shown into the restaurant and seated at our table. The place was beautiful and the food was amazing. It even had instructions on how to sort your sauces and how to eat your Dim Sum 'Hong Kong Style!' - brilliant!
After dinner, we wandered down to the harbour to see our last Symphony of light show before walking back to our place to pack up and get ready for our early morning flight the next day.
We've both had a great time in Hong Kong - it's the most modern, clean, contrasting and dazzlingly bright city we've ever been to. Its parks and open spaces are a wonder especially given their setting in a teeming metropolis of a city of skyscrapers and neon signs. The mix of technology, endless access to wi fi in the most remote areas, with the old, ancient temples and cable carts, makes for an interesting combination of old meets new. And it's so well thought out - perfect public transport, BBQ areas on beaches, exercise areas for the elderly, guided hikes and walks. These all make it a great place to visit and get around - we can definitely see why lots of ex pats choose Hong Kong as their home. Hong Kong is definitely a shoppers paradise with Gucci, Prada and watches galore in every other shop, but also some awesome markets and cheap stalls, so it caters for every pocket - we just wish our pockets were Louis Vouton lined!! Next stop Sydney for Christmas and New Year!
