Day 223 - Cartagena, Colombia & Colombia sum up - Saturday 26th May 2012
It's hard not to completely fall in love with Cartagena, with its cobbled walkways, beautiful colonial buildings, huge balconies covered with those pink flowers (that unfortunately would never grow in England) - it's like a picture perfect postcard just waiting to be photographed and admired. The old town, a Unesco World Heritage site and where we were staying, is one of those places you can just spend hours wandering around and so that's exactly what we decided to do, well that and of course lots of eating….. The only thing con to all this beauty is that it's the most humid place in the universe!! It's lovely and warm and the sun seemed to always shine but you're constantly moist (not like that your perv's!! That was Adam, not me!!). It's Colombia's answer to the sauna.
First up was breakfast and what a breakfast it was! We stumbled across this stunning little bakery, come restaurant, and indulged in very tasty empanada filled with egg and meat, and eggs with smoked salmon, washed down by the most posh looking coffee I've ever seen. We were most tempted by the various cakes on offer but decided it was a little too early and so made a pack that we'd return later in the day for one. After all that food we walked for hours just taking in the day to day goings on of the old town, the people and the buildings. Come lunchtime we met Danielle and decided it was time for that cake and so headed back to the bakery and spoiled ourselves with pink lemonade and chocolate brownie (Adam is starting to become "one of the girls" - he loves a pink lemonade!!). We were all still peckish and so made our way to a little place that we'd walked past in the morning; it was called La Cevicheria and had a lovely blue and white interior and funny enough, great ceviches! Stomachs full, we headed over to the Getsemani part of town where Danielle was staying. Once Danielle had picked up some bits we walked to the city's wall and marvelled at the huge Colombian flag that hangs over the distant fort. Further along the wall we came to a bar and ordered some drinks ready to watch the sunset; instead we were hit by a huge rain storm! After a couple of drinks we said our goodbyes to Danielle and strolled back to our place to pack ready for our flight to Peru the following morning.
Colombia is nothing like we expected and we loved every minute of it. For me it rivalled India as my favourite country so far and for Adam it topped the list (not including Vegas baby, of course!). The sun always shone (with exception of Bogota), the rum tasted great, and the people friendly and welcoming. We met some great people and had some very fun and memorable times. Despite what you read and hear we never felt threatened or uncomfortable once in our three weeks. Our time in Colombia was short but extremely sweet and we couldn't have wished for a more perfect start to our South American adventure.
