No, I am not kidding. This is probbably as hot as it can get. And even for Monika, who's perceiption of heat is more african than european, IT IS TOO HOT!
We took a really cool and modern bus from Singapore and 5 hours later we were in the middle of ASIA. +34 degrees in a shade, an ocean of people, traffic in all directions (but mostly standing still and honking), huge skyscrapers that block even the slightest wind blow and the smells: curry, chinese spices, scents from temples, garbage and sewers running along the pavements. Once again, Asia!
Kuala Lumpur (the capital for those who missed the geography lessons) is a huge, crowded and cool city happily shared by malaysians, lizards, monkeys and chinese. The first impression, despite the chaos, was really good and we were looking forwards to at least a week here. It took us however 3 days to be craving for air and wanna get the hell out of here. And since it was friday and Monika needed a Thailand visa that wouldn't be processed until tuesday, the only choice was to start sightseeing.
Sulking about luxurious Hilton hotels with pools and air conditioning, pouring with swet we stolled the streets and markets; ate on the street corners and in fine restaurants and ate all the asian food we could get. Anton's diet nowadays consists of 7-8 asian meals and a McDonalds burger before bed. Monika is still, mostly, loving it. The only thing that makes it hard here, being in a muslim country, is the constant hassle about being properly dressed. It's almost +40 degrees and women have to cover shoulders and hair! And then we have the street markets...thousands of people selling everything between heaven and earth and very eager to not let you pass without at least bargaining a little. Exausting and fun! We came up with a technique were Monika acts as she really wants something and Anton is tall and angry and starts pulling her away when we don't get the price we want. Once we start walking away, Monika looks over her shoulder and looks sad and ... we get the price! Tadaaa! Live and learn. But seriously, spending 30min bargaining when all you want is a bottle of water is just unnecessary.
So this has been our week in Kuala Lumpur. And with visas to Thailand granted we can't wait to be cathing a bus to the East coast of the country. Beaches, small huts and no markets here we come! Don't know when we'll be able to write again but we'll make sure to tan and swim for all of you back home!
Kiss and hug yourselves from us
Over and out!
