Our first day trip with Sarah and the kids was to Maastricht. This is a city approximately 15 minutes from Geleen by train and is where Sarah's office is. It is also one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. It was a beautiful place to spend a day....narrow cobbled streets, picture-perfect medieval buildings, and towering churches.
One of the really cool places we found in Maastricht was a church that has been converted into a book store. We actually sought this place out after reading an article online earlier that day that had it listed as one of the 'World's Best Bookstores'. They had a great children's book section, where I took some time to read with Linden...in Dutch. He thought my phonetic pronunciation was pretty hilarious!
We spent the day wandering all over the historic city. I think Linden walked the equivalent of a marathon that day on his three year old legs! Sarah took us in to her office to meet her colleagues. They were all very nice and were giving Sarah suggestions for other day trip destinations for us. One of the places they told us about was Liege, Belgium...about another 30minute train ride away.
