After crossing the "Friendship Bridge" from Laos into Thailand we hopped aboard our overnight train to Bangkok. I don't think Laos even has a railway line - they only had the one "main" road, which passed bumpily through all the towns and the few Lao cities. All the tiome we were travelling,Johnny and I never realised we were on THE major road - as we jolted along the dirt, which fell away into muddy crevices at points, twisting our way through the mountains leaving a storm of dust behind us, we were convinced that the driver of our van was taking us on some random backroad!
The train was very different to the Chinese overnighters. Instead of the bunks hanging from the ceiling as you step on the train, attendants would come and magically transform two facing seats into two bunk beds! As we rocked and rolled around in the FREEZING carriage, I thought about how happy I am .
