Not sure where to start with Phuket. Its mental. Its how I imagine Benidorm to be! Only with hundreds of Russians and ping pong shows. Dont think ive ever seen so many Russians! Rikki said she doesnt know how I can tell they are Russian. But you can. They have square heads, Short hair with a longer bit at the back that makes them look like an Irish traveller, pot bellies and a horrific dress sense that would look normal 20 years ago. They all look depressed and wear speedos at the beach. Its all very disturbing. I like to play the game spot the Russian. When we are sat having a beer or a coffee we people watch and I count the Russians. Most of the women are really skinny and tall. Probably Wimbledon hopefulls. The TV also has a channel dedicated to Russians, and every Wednesday and Sunday they have a Russian night on the beach.
Anyway moving on... the beach isnt great. The sand and water dont look too good but you can barely see the sand due to the amount of people on the beach. So we have avoided it. Instead we sit on the roof of our hotel and sunbathe their with our tiny swimming pool. Its the same size of a jacuzzi. All the other islands so far have been green, with gorgeous beaches and nice blue ocean. Its also been a 'nice busy'. In other words its not over crowded but you can still people watch. Everywhere you look in Phuket is dominated by huge concrete buildings and neon lights. There is no Thai charm and you could be anywhere in the world.
We have struggled to find Thai food here. They do serve it but its always at the back of the menu after the burgers and Pizzas. Its also a lot more expensive than anywhere else. Never the less it is the start of the high season so we are thankful that we leave tomorrow. Due to the prices we have been trying to pass the time. We have both had enough of Thailand and are ready to move on. The people, in most places, have been really friendly, but here they are really rude and dont give a toss. Only this morning a guy walked past, turned, and sneezed on me and then coughed. Then carried on walking. Even the tramps of Wakefield have better manners.
On the plus side the hotel is really nice with a huge room, TV, mini bar etc. Although we are slap bang in the middle of all the bars so its hard to get some sleep. The hotel staff to be fair are really nice and suggested that they take us to the airport 30 minutes earlier than planned as they didnt know how bad traffic would be. So we are been picked up at 6.30am! Or half 11 at night your time as we are now 7 hours ahead. Soon to be 8 when we get to Singapore and Borneo. All our accomodation is now booked for Singapore, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. We cant wait to see the Orangutans!
Phuket has been the worst place in Thailand overall but the accomodation is one of the best. The worst accomodation was in Ko Phi Phi. Our favourite place was probably Krabi. STAY AWAY FROM PHUKET (Well Patong Beach). Unless you are having a lads/lasses holiday or its your Hen/Stag do.
Singapore beckons...

Anne Hi there from a ver, very wet Scotland. Phuket sounds awful know what you mean about the Russians, they are fairly easy to spot. Will be very interested to hear what you think of Kota Kinabaloobalu as Steve had a job offered there about 36 years ago - we just weren't brave enough to go all those years ago. Keep blogging. SCA
Liz Hope you have a good flight to Singapore! One more day to work thank goodness! Ready for a break from work and can't wait to get some sun. We staying at Bewleys tomorrow night and have an early flight via Amsterdam on Friday morning. Keep the blog going - can't wait to hear more. Bet Rikki is getting excited about seeing the orangutans. lots of love xx
Judd When you say you have now read 6 books (in your whole life), you arent far short of writing one with this missive. There cant be many nationalities that havent come under your scourge either! Still glad to know that you are learning everything from your mother! Well looks like Thailand is out for a beach holiday in February. Enjoy Singapore. If you have a decent T shirt and shoes go to Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling. Treat yourself! Keep the blog going. Wish we were off to Borneo as well! Enjoy. Lots of love to Rikki xx
