Allahabad & along The Ganges… Having spent hours on a bus recovering from the overnight train (especially Carl – Mr. Delhi Belly 2006!!) on some of the worst roads in India we reached Allahabad, where three holy rivers meet, The Ganga, The Yamuna & The Saravati - therefore this spot is soooooo holy to the Hindu faith! We were followed round the whole time by a little boy who kept showing us his snake… (Not his willy) in a basket… it looked dead to me but of course he wanted money for the pleasure! There were thousands of people there, many in mourning as people come to this area to die as then they can be cremated into the holy river… more on that later!! Then we continued on our bumpy bus to meet the river boats – three tiny boats for 10 fat westerners to lie on and get rowed up the river by some tiny Indian guys! When we ate, the kitchen boat pulled up alongside & cooked us so much yummy Indian food – Luxury! We camped overnight on the sand banks along the side of the river – quite eerie as there is no one in sight, just darkness & we chilled out under a perfect sky of stars! We had the privilege of using a toilet tent here – well, a hole in the sand! A big relief to Gina & Michelle who had been struggling with peeing on the banks in front of everyone during the day!! The next day we sailed back along the river & saw loads of river dolphins & cremations! Alison commented on how she missed the smell of a home cooked roast, until we all realised there was a cremation going on down wind! We met another bus & continued into Varanasi – home of the open air cremations along the Ghats… Not sure what to expect… xx Bec & Mr Delhi Belly xx
