A lazy last day with Alan & Caroline, with scrambled eggs & tomato to start. Scott put in a new pane of glass in one of the gite's door complete with putty, & fixed the leaking sink, whilst I finished our washing. Drove back into the walled city of Brouage to visit the shops there, but nothing of any interest. The wooden shutters on the local homes are painted either blue or green to represent working the sea or the land. Saw white swans, a beaver & the huge storks in or around the canals that run through this area. Later that evening, Caroline took us to one of her favourite restaurants, 'La Cayenne' specifically named after the area within Marennes, La Charente Maritime. This is famous for its oysters, which are also sent to Paris. For entree we had nos moules beurre ail persil croutons (mussels with butter, parsley & croutons) - a huge bowl between us with loads of garlic. Next course, we both had fish, Scott's was baked whole, mine was filleted with a gorgeous leek sauce & with it, a bottle of really nice rose. The restaurant was like an up-market oyster shack with long burl tables & blue decor. For dessert we had a HUGE profiterole filled with a rich creamy icecream & smothered in chocolate sauce. We were so full!! After we got home, Alan went to bed & we had a last wine with Caroline. How we will miss them. Caroline & I have always got on so well & kept in constant contact, despite the distance. I have always felt a strong affinity with her. Seeing Alan so much like my Dad has been beautiful beyond words, like having part of him back.
We will miss Beaumont with its rambling stone buildings, acres of sunflowers & sweeping views to the walled city & beyond to the sea. Such an authentic taste of rural France & provincial life.
