we are now in Siem Reap. we stayed in Phnom Penh for a while and it was really nice. our guesthouse was right on the lake(sort of a lake). we spent one day touring the Genocide sights. it was rough. we went to S-21 which was a prison and then to the killing fields. it was terrible, but it was also very enlightening on the horrible civil problems Cambodia has had. It really is a lovely country and the people are so great. the kids here are probably the cutest kids ive ever seen. we also spent one day at an orphanage. there was a large group of us that went and we brought a ton of toys and learning stuff, probabaly too much. but the kids loved it.
we then left to go to Sihanoukville, which is on the west coast, on the Gulf of Thailand. it was really great there as well. nice to just chill on the beach for a few days. we stayed at a place called Chivas Shack (not just a clever name). but it was okay for the cheap price. the beach was beautiful and the water was so nice. we had our relaxation and then we had to go back to Phnom Penh to pick up our passports that were getting our Lao visas.
well the bus ride back was interesting. we were in the back row, and luckily john had the middle seat, because he would have not fit in any other seat. but the couple next to him were having some issues with their bodily functions the entire way. it was really gross. we ran off as soon as we arrived.
our passports werent ready so we jumped on another bus to Siem Reap. a much more pleasant ride. we got in at night and were immediately mobbed
by the tuk tuk drivers. it was pretty funny. i couldnt even see john at one point
because he had so many around him. he grabbed one and we were off to our guesthouse.
the next day we planned our day in Angkor. now we know people here spend a lot of time at these temples, since there are so many, but we know our attention span by now. so we opted for the one day pass, which was plenty!
we went to Angkor Thom, which was humongous, then to Prenh Kea (i think), which looked like it as been eaten by these giant trees, and lastly Angkor Wat!!
it really is beautiful and HUGE! we took some nice photos but after 7 hours of temples we called it a day.
when we got home, we chilled out a bit and then went for some local Khmer curry at a place where Mic Jagger ate while he was here. it was so good!
so today has been our last full day in Siem Reap. this might be the most beautiful city in Cambodia. its so breezy and theres trees that line the roads, it deffinitely has the most French feel to it.
but its off tomorrow and we head to STung Treng, we may go around the northeast or may just go staight to Laos- who knows!!
