On the night before D-Day paratroopers were dropped all over, most were not dropped on their target, including one who was dropped on this church. There was a fire just across the way, so the Germans saw him and shot his foot. He then played dead, and eventually was freed by German soldiers. After being briefly captured, this was the first liberated town in northern Europe.
