Hello there you lovely people.
As always, hope you're well. Thinking of you all!
So…where were we last time?
Ah yes, Phuket… we enjoyed our last few days there, chilling out in the sun and not doing much else to be perfectly honest (apart from the odd dip in the pool or an afternoon nap if we could muster up the strength).
Flew to Hong Kong on Thursday, was such a shock to step out of the airport and to not be hit by humidity for the first time in a month. It's actually nice and warm here (about 24/25 degrees in the sunshine) but we're basically in constant shade as the buildings are so high and so close together (Thailand tans are fading fast!). The lack of humidity makes the evenings feel chilly.
Spent the first few says wandering around and trying to gain our bearings, felt like a world away from Thailand, everyone's so sophisticated in their office/city wear and we're walking around in our shorts and flips flops. It's also feels so clean; cleanliness is obviously a big priority here - the buttons in our hotel lift are sanitised 8 times a day!
We are staying in a hostel/hotel which is quite far from the city, last stop on the MTR (tube). Not many Europeans out here, children seem to stare at us like we're aliens, obviously some of the first blondes they've seen! Talking of the MTR, we keep laughing that every exit leads into a new shopping centre, no joke; we've been trapped a few times! The scale of this place is unreal, saying that - feel quite at home here now, the hustle and bustle of a modern city is quite a nice after lounging around for a few weeks.
We've walked along the shoreline a few times, amazing views and the architecture is out of this world. I've finally bought a new camera so you'll be able to see a million new pictures. Strangely, one of the first things we noticed was that the scaffolding on buildings is made from bamboo, made us laugh although it makes sense I suppose! Also spent a couple of afternoons in Kowloon park, again very picturesque.
We walked 'The Avenue of Stars' on Sunday - ignorant as we are, the only names we recognised were Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. The locals were laughing at us for getting excited over those. Went to watch a few afternoon races at Happy Valley racecourse as well, again beautiful surroundings, especially in the beautiful sunshine, Matt placed one bet, needless to say 'Toy Story' didn't perform on the day. There were lots of Aussies there betting away their life savings, although the Hong Kong residents are probably more fanatical; it's all taken very seriously, lots of time is spent studying strange-looking numbers on screens; some locals turn up in their slippers - maximum comfort I suppose!
Went to Ocean Park (animal/theme park) yesterday, so much walking - our bodies are aching! The park's situated just out of the city in some beautiful mountains, again more scenery to be enjoyed, not bad for a Monday morning in November! Ha. We had to get a cable car to another part of the park, Matt was quite sure that the cable was going to snap for the entire journey.
Flying to Japan nice and early tomorrow morning for ten days of exploration….will update again when we can.
Lots of love xxxxx
