This relatively new city does have an element of artificiality yet as a visitor we do find it enticing. Does one really need fake ski fields in the middle east, or a building nearly 1 km high? I think not, but if it drags in the tourists, why not?
After spending much of the day gazing upwards are oddly shaped skyscrapers and watching dancing fountains, tonight we are heading out to celebrate john's birthday where there may be more fake stuff (perhaps the fountain will sparkle tonight). Looking forward to seeing what more dubai has to offer over the next couple of days!
(John) the CARS! I saw mustangs and mclarens all over the place and no one gives a toss about the speed limits. There are speed cameras and police but not many and the fines are not huge. We were having the most amazing lunch at Mezza house street cafe when suddenly we saw (and heard) two Mclarens drag race past us Susan said one was doing 110! The noise of two buzzing v12s echoing between the high rises was heaven. All the locals didnt notice. They were too busy gurgling away on their shisha pipes which by the way I got more than enough of without having my own. Good odour but I hear one sesh is the same as 600 ciggys yuk!!! The burg Khalifa is nuts. That thing is stupid high like its nobody's business! You can be almost a kilometer away from it yet it still towers right over you when you look at its top!!
It has hundreds of strobe lights all over it which make it sparkle at night intensely and during the day it shines like a mirror. I think window cleaners clean it constantly.
It was booked out to go to its observation deck during our stay so we are booking it on our return journey in 2 months time. Sorry Susy guess you get to see it afterall!!
My thoughts on Dubai- desert capitalism fueled by oil money equals dusty fun. The food is A1 and shopping is good but the designers of this place forgot to consider pedestrians. One entrance to Dubai mall caters to cars only yet thousands of people have to walk that way to get to the khalifa everyday!
I saw a very dusty black lambogini aventador just left in the street no where near any security on our last nite and was observed on the footpath slumped near it making gurgling noises staring at it.

Liz Oh my goodness that is sooo high. Hope everything is going well. :)
Susan towne Liz, I was relieved when tickets to the top were sold out. I felt dizzy looking at the top from the ground.
Kazi There are perks of living here.. I am too 1 of the thousands of young adults.. born and grew up here despite being from an Asian country.. and now being a final year student in UK and travelling a bit myself.. I realised.. despite so many of its flaws like many other great cities.. the sense of security can't be rivalled.. if one just mind it's own and dnt tend to break some of its rules.. it is the best to live.. hands down! :) hope u enjoyed and will enjoy every time you visit!
