Food tour Malaysia! Got the LRt out to the suburbs with minimum fuss. Got there really early so waited in the heat for everyone else. Our guide, Farah, picked us up in her Kia van and off we went...slowly, into very heavy traffic! First stop was a Chinese place by the side of the road, the sort of place as a westerner you would never be brave enough to go into but look wistfully in at all the locals having a ball. We had pork wrapped in bean curd and fried, with chili and brown, thick soy. YUM. Then a kind of crispy bean curd sandwich with a peanut sauce, interesting. Then KL noodles, which are unique to KL and apparently this was one of the best examples of it in the city. A couple of Tigers (this wasn't a Muslim restaurant) while we admired the new years decorations (giant red and yellow pineapples which I quite fancied) before Checking the darkening sky for rain and heading back to the car.
Next stop was a fantastic Malay Muslim place in the middle of a pretty industrialized area. Open till 3am and full of people having a bite. We had mackerel wrapped in banana leaves an grilled, covered in a slightly spicy sweet sauce. Really good. Also traditional coconut rice wrapped in banana leaf with spicey paste, anchovy and peanut with half a boiled egg. A plate of eggs was also on the table, you pay for only what you eat, which also goes for the other food. We also had a really peppery mutton (goat) soup, not really my thing. Also some malay "cakes" which were more savory, kind of like a samosa but eaten with tea. The thani (sp?) which is sweet pulled tea with ginger, quite tasty!! We had a great time here, really really local and had fun talking to the other patrons and having pictures with the people cooking.
Still no rain, yay! Next off to the best Indian Muslim place in town for all sorts of different roti and one fiery curry that doesn't always agree with western tummies! The most amazing was a roti that was a tower...photos are the only thing that can explain it. Sugary buttery goodness, yummy. The curry with 5 gravies was pretty intense, the hotness sat at the back of my mouth and didn't burn so much as...grow. Fresh lime juice as an accompaniment was divine. One more stop for Penang pancakes then finally home to lay groaning and clutching my belly (in a good, full way not an oh god where is the toilet that curry didn't agree with me way). Bed time ASAP because I need to be up at 5am for flight to Penang!
KL has been great. I wasn't expecting to really enjoy it so it's been a great surprise!
