On our way home.
Just passed Dalwhinnie and it's snowing. This wasn't in the script - winter was supposed to be over and we would be into gardening and short sleeved golf when we got home.
So what were the best bits? Our favourite places were Chaing Mai in Thailand, Luang Prabang in Laos and Hoi An in Vietnam. These were places that we would love to go back to in the future.
The best things that we have seen? Possibly the palace and Wat Po in Bangkok or perhaps the hilltop temple in Chaing Mai where we became temporary Buddhists or maybe the white temple in Chaing Rai. Perhaps the waterfalls at Luang Prabang or the villages along the mighty Mekong river. Anchor Wat? We have seen so many wonderful things that it is difficult to choose the highlights.
Best experiences? Meeting and partying with the children in our home stay village in Laos, motor biking at top speed through the streets and villages surrounding Hue. Bamboo rafting down the river during our hill tribes trek, quad biking in Siam Reip, bathing with elephants at Luang Prabang? Late night bowling with Big Frank, chocolate cheese cake in Hoi An, the cycle ride to the beach in Hoi An? White water rafting in Bali, snorkelling with turtles in Gili Meno. Our R&R time in Phuket was fabulous and put us back on our feet for the rest of the trip. Almost every day had something special.
Worst bits? Susan being ill and having to trek out of the jungle wasn't fun but was memorable. The food in Laos wasn't brilliant.
So was it worthwhile? Absolutely and we would both do something similar in a minute!
Special thanks to everyone who made it possible. To Fiona for booking the trip and getting us a generous discount. To David and Maureen for looking after our house and cars, Douglas for getting us to Glasgow airport and picking us up again, James and Laura for their hospitality in Singapore and lending us the villa in Phuket, Mum and Michael for putting us up on the way home and Sharon and Bob for looking after us when we got back to Inverness. Also thanks to Pauline, Joe and Laziz, our tour guides who got us into the most wonderful places and to our travelling companions who were such good company.
