the bus ride from siam reap to cambodias capital took 6 hours and made our bums sore.
phnom penh is a capital like any other in this part of the world.it was very similar to delhi.jen and me felt comfortable crossing roads between the chaotic traffic and walking trough the bussy streets and markets.
but first of all we needed a hotel.in our guide book we read about the beautiful houses on stilts around the lake in phnom penh.it sounded like paradise and we wanted to have a room in one of those lake houses with a view of the lake of course.
with an ideal picture in our mind we went to the lake and got so disappointed.there was a lake!a big lake wih lots of those hostels on "legs"but it was more than filthy and dodgy.nothing for 2 little foreign girls.we travelled on a low bugdet but we could do that.it was wet, mouldy and dark.the room were like litte boxes without a window.that didnt work for us and we gave up the idea of sitting on a beautiful terrace overseeing the lake.
off we went to stay in a guest house near the riverside on the other side of the city.this guest house is well know amongst travellers and was quit busy.so far we always found a nice, clean room with ac for£15 for the both of us-perfect!
this afternoon we explored the city-first we came across a very strange fruit.it looked like a kaktus from the outside and tasted like a pea from the inside.the woman who sold those things was so cute.the local people dont speak any english but always have a smile on their face.the cambodians are friendly, smily and shy at the same time which makes them very humble.its such fun to comunicate with your hands but it also feels strange not to be able to use english as we expect the whole world to know english.
we toddled along the riverside and watched the young cambodians coming together to play sackball or badminton. couples just came to spend some time togehter, children were playing under the cool shade of the trees, older cambodians were exercising to stay fit and fruit and food sellers were trying to sell ther stuff on the side of the road while we were in the middle of all this.what a scene-i loved watching it.
once in cambodia we had to try a very common typ of transportation- going on the back of a bike trough the chaotic traffic of phnom penh.
so lets try it-there we were, the driver and the 2 of us on the back.it was great to see the city from the back of a bike.anyway,we couldnt go fast as the traffic was crazy!
at the end of the day we treated ourself with a full body massage.that was the first time for me!my friend is an expert when it comes to massages.so we had to try the cambodians.it was my first massage and she walked on me!she literally walked on my back!!!after she started to massage up my bum and i was screaming as it didnt expect that either. what an experience.relaxed and happy we went to bed as we had an emotional day in front of us- it was time to pay the "killing fields" a vistit.
