So …I left San Francisco and decided to go to the ‘Burning Man ‘ festival .. Which if you haven’t heard of is a MASSIVE party in the middle of the desert. It’s very hard to describe exactly what it is about but I would highly recommend going at least once if you get the chance. (Have a look on Google)
It is an incredible location where thousands of people go to see or build beautiful huge art installations or vehicles out of anything possible, dress up in wacky costumes of any style and party for a week in the middle of the Nevada desert. Nothing is available to buy , all provisions are swapped or given away. The photos give you some idea but not enough, it is a cross between the Rio carnival, Glastonbury and Mad Max . At night the whole area is lit up by fire and lights from the art works. I was adopted by a lovely group who invited me into their camp where I stayed for the week….Thank you so much Alex and the crew for such a fantastic event..
I then went on to Los Angeles with David , a guy who has been travelling around the world on his motorbike for 5 years. He introduced me to his friends John and Sally ,an adorable couple who are inspirational with their relentless energy , still flying open cockpit planes and competing in racing cars at 77...I wish I was 30 years older.. John is the oldest sprint car racer in the world and the youngest 77 year old I’ve ever met.
Went to Yosemite, very nice, and carried on to Death Valley , very hot. at 125% .and quite amazing .Got stuck in sand off road ,very stupid and rather dangerous.
Grand Canyon was an unbelievably bloody big hole and nothing can prepare you for the enormity of it . I took a helicopter flight into it with the ‘Lord of the Rings ‘soundtrack pumped in to my headphones. An unforgettable trip. Zion Canyon was another BIG hole with more shades of orange and green than I’ve ever seen.
Met a chap ,Frank, also a jolly nice chap, who convinced me to join him on to the Colorado River fly fishing. I caught 3 trout ..great day out..
Rode to Tucson, Arizona where Frank fitted new tyres to my bike (he just happens to be an ex BMW motorbike engineer ) ready for crossing over the border into Mexico where the real adventure begins .America was fabulous and the Americans couldn’t have been nicer people so am a little sad to leave.
5TH October.
Had a whole day in Mexico without being kidnapped or murdered …which most people I’ve met ,who haven’t been there, would consider quite an achievement..
6th October
I’m now on a beach in the Baja ,West coast of Mexico eating fresh fish tacos and drinking an ice cold beer watching pelicans fishing.
I’m still having a fantastic journey and am excited everyday by new experiences .
but should probably shut up and just send the photos…
Miss you all, well most of you... xxx
