I made the decision to go to Adelaide the night before. It was a combination of factors. The humidity was getting ridiculous, the nightlife was far too good - which was bad for the bank balance and finally the job situation. I couldn’t seem to find a decent job in Darwin so I decided to give Adelaide a try. In true style I went for a couple of farewell drinks on my last night in Darwin, which turned into a few too many drinks. So many in-fact that I ended up missing my airport transfer bus and had to call for a taxi to ensure I made it to the Airport to catch the flight. Oh the dramas! Actually I was lucky that I set a second alarm on my mobile phone, something that I never do but decided to set when drunk, otherwise I would have missed the flight altogether. 29 years old going on 18.….! It was a real shame leaving Darwin. Another new place and new challenges though!
I slept the whole way on the four hour flight to Adelaide. Needless to say! On arriving into Adelaide I jumped on the Airport transfer bus and booked myself into the YHA. The YHA, I quickly found out, was lifeless and soulless with no character and no social vibe. I decided that the hostel wasn’t for me. My main aim was to find work but I wanted to meet a few people while I was there! After one night I booked myself into My Place backpackers - a much better hostel, Smaller but with a much better vibe. As soon as I arrived people were much more friendly and sociable.
I spent a lot of my time in Adelaide looking for work - that was my main priority and consequently I didn’t spend a lot of time checking out some of the more touristy things to do. I did spend a couple of afternoons at Glenelg beach, which is a nice beach but spoilt a little by a few ugly buildings on the beach front. The city centre is much like any city centre. Plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. Walking through the city centre it was kind of weird to hear Christmas music in 30+ degree temperatures. And hearing O Tannenbaum auf deutsch was also a bit strange. German Christmas music being played in the middle of Adelaide! A bit random. I liked Adelaide and will definitely come back at some point to have a better look around the more tourist things, but the plan was to find work, which I was finding difficult so I decided to cut my losses and fly to Sydney after about 10 days of trying.
Not much to report from Adelaide then, hopefully I will get back there soon and be able to look around a bit more.
