Hello all, sorry I have been away a while but I have been a busy boy!!
I realise that last time I probably went into a little too much detail so will try to keep it a bit briefer this time.
So when I left you I was in Hoi An and heading to the pool for drinks. Well this night deserves a special mention because for one night and one night only ladies and gentlemen Miss. Nicci Smith rejoined the fold!! So in honour of this myself and Dan went out and purchased 2 litres of vodka, 8 can's of lager and mixers all for 9 quid, you can't argue with that folks!! So after chilling by the pool and catching up we got stuck into the booze. We polished off the vodka pretty quick and the can's of lager and popped out to get another bottle for when we got back that night. After everybody got back from the tailors we headed into Hoi An for a feed and more booze!! The search proved fruitless at first and when everywhere started shutting up we dived into the first place that sold food. So after a few burgers and more drink we were determined to go to the 'After' party which is the only place in Hoi An open after 11:30. So after all piling into the coach and having a wee sing along on the way we made it to the After party. To say we were disappointed could monly be trumped by the look on the staff's face's whom had to wake up once they had customers!! The place was stuck in a bit of time warp and we were the only one's there!! There is only one thing to do in a situation like that and that is get more drunk!! So after being stalked by a strange security guard and the arrival of some freaks we decided to get the 2am bus back. In our slightly drunked state the driver got slightly annoyed with Nicci beeping the horn telling the driver to get a move on and our constant shouts to put the radio on, I think he was glad to see the back of us!! So we got back to the hotel and start some drinking games, now I have to admit I do not remember a thing after this and am told that I was just being a drunken dickhead, so nothing new there. After being carried out the room by Dan and guided back to my room by Alan, I believe I bragged about never puking. Well I think you guess what happened when I got back the room!!
The next day I cannout deny I was a bit rough and could not manage breakfast. Nicci and Alan came to say goodbye and brought the last of the vodka with them, with the shout 'hair of the dog' so after knocking back the last of the vodka I did feel better, plus the valium helped!! Once we got the airport I had a few more beers set me reet.
After arriving in Hoi Chin Minh City/Saigon we checked in and had some spare time before the group meal. So I decided to have a sleep and didn't wake up the next day so that was a complete waste of time!!
The next day I woke up feeling refreshed after my coma like sleep and was ready for the day. We met our local guide Hi and went to the Cu Chi tunnels, which the Vientcong used to hide in during the war. We also saw some of the tactics they used in the war and I have to admit alot of them looked like they would hurt!! After a walk through the tunnel's I have to admit I was ever so slightly sweaty!! Glad I did it though and was good fun. After this I had a go at shooting an M60 machine gun and boy are those things loud!! Didn't manage to hit anything mind you!!
After the tunnel's we got dropped off by the Notre Dame cathedral, I was expecting something quite grand and felt a little let down by it!! We had lunch and then we split into 2 groups, some of us went to the rememberance museum, which is quite tough going and pulls no punches about the war and it's effect's. The Agent Orange section was particularly tough going.
We arrived back at our hotel to meet our new comers who are Drew and Emily (newlyweds) and Eline (English girl) and headed out for a group meal. Armed with the names of some local bar's we were determined to have a boogie tonight. Sadly once again that did not happen, due to being ripped off by a taxi driver and then the ridiculous prices the club wanted. So we wandered back to the hotel ever so slightly drunk and tried to avoid the rats the size of cats!!
The next day was our trip down the Mekong Delta. Once again I was disappointed with this trip, not sure if it was because it was pissing it down with rain and got soaked or there just wasn't much nto see. We did get taken part of the way by a traditional boat which was a laugh and then had lunch and were treated to some strange traditional Vietnamese folk music, with the parts bneing played out , very odd. By the end of the trip me backside was devoid of all feeling!!
After having a bit of a nightmare with the food tonight we came good with the bar. We went to the Acoustic Bar which have live band's doing covers. The place was rammed and it was a bit of a pain trying to get drinks but the atmosphere was good and Dan was the tallest person there easily!! Some tv personality got up and did a few tunes and the crowd went wild. After Laura got chatting to some local's they put a surprise request in for us to do a song!! Dan, Laur and Jemma got up and after a bit of debating Dan was given the task of belting out a tune and man did the boy do good. He sang 'Standing There' byt the Beatles and I have it on video and will try to upload it soon. It was a good night.
The next day we left for Cambodia, so what can I tell you about Vietnam, well the country has an incerdibly proud people and is a fast growing nation. There appears to be no highway code and the drivers appear to revel in playing chicken!! Also I think that Top Gear show was edited really well!! My favourite place was probably Hoi An and wish I could have had a little more time to explore some other parts of the country.
So we were up at ^am for the public bus to Phnom Penh. Once again you could not watch the road without wanting to shout out 'watch out' so chilled put instead and popped one of my little valium frineds!! We got there quite handy and ahead of schedule so had time to chill out. So we headed to the local supermarket, a strange place that I couldn't really figure out. But whilst we were in there there was a tropical storm that was like the heavens had opened. After me, Dan and Laura decided to make a run for it we got soaked through. Not surprisingly the bike tour of Phom Penh that we had booked was cancelled. So after drying out and chilling out we headed out to FCC which is right on the Mekong Delta for another gorgeous meal. After that we hit a rather strange bar called 'In The Heart Of Darkness' and had a bit of a dance on the podium!!
Tonight was kind of a tough day, we visitied the Genocide museum which is the S21 prison and then the killing fields. Not sure what to say about it really, was kind of ashamed that I never knew more of the history behind considering a 3rd of the population were wiped out and that Pol Pot never answered for his crimes against the Cambodian people. We met one of only 7 people to survive the S21 prison campe who is deaf from being tortured. I think I will leave that there.
One thing we did learn though is that Phnom Penh has a problem with glue sniffing monkeys!! No joke, they go to rehab and everything!!
In the afternoon we did our rearranged bike tour of Phnom Penh and it was good fun. I managed to convince my driver to let me have a go and not going to lie it was tough and the sweat was pouring off me by the end of it!!
W got dropped off at the grand palace after this which is a sight to behold. The king was even in residence whilst we were there but wouldn't some and say hi!!
That night we had another gorgeous meal at "Friends' restaurant which hepls underpriviledged kids in Cambodia.
Today we headed to our final destination on the tour Siem Reap. Another long bus journey was made easier by valium and a bit of a laugh at the back of the coach. The hotel is lovely and I really like Siem Reap. That night we headed out for a traditional Cambodian buffet and when being showed to our table we pointed out a frog to the waiter thinking he'd shoe it away with his foot, before he stamped on it!! We were treated to some traditional Cambodian dances and I got up in the end, I think you can tell from the pics it wasn't awkward at all!!
After food we hit pub st (the clue is in the name) and had a few drinks down there. Myself and Dan even got a fish pedicure, which is a bit odd.
Was up at 4:10am today to catch the sunrise over Angkor Wat. Was surprised by the amount of people there but glad we got to see it. After going back for some breakfast and to freshen up we headed back out to explore Angkor Wat. This Was a fun day and really enjoyed myself. Just hope the pics do it justice. We stayed till sunset and ended up getting merrily drunk watching the sunset!!
That night we had a nother great meal before heading back down pub st. Sadly we found a bar that does live karoke with a band. By rendition of 'Hotel California' was cringeworthy to say the least!! Everyone else did a good job. They even let Dan and Laura get up on the instruments and have a little go. Laura was on the piano and Dan the drums and they did a great job.
Last day in Siem Reap today and we headed out to some falls in Bem Meera. Was good fun, although nthe fish kept nibbling us!! After that we headed over to the ruined temple for a scramble round that. It was good fun and felt like a kid. Although I don't think I have ever sweated so much in my entire life.
That night we had our last group meal because Jemma and Laura were staying in Siem Reap for a bit longer. Had a nice meal and then we hit the Temple bar. I am sure I was ganged up on in 'I have never....' game!! By the time we hit the dancefloor I was quite drunk and then the dare's started!! I was dared to get on the podium witrh my top off, which I of course did and was not exactly my proudest moment!! We left there and went back the hotel to continue drinking.
Was a touch hungover for our drive back to Bangkok and was sorry to say goodbye to Laura and Jemma. Just realised that my tour is nearly over :-(
We arrived in bangkok and checked in before going out for our last group meal. I had the flaming volcanoe chicken with Dan and man it was proper on fire!! We then headed down to Kho San Rd for drinks. Sadly my stomach was dodgy so had to head home early in fear of following through!!
Having a bit of a night mare today, need to extend me visa for Thailand and the bloody embassy was closed!! So stuck in Bangkok till Monday at least. But went and watched the Hangover 2 after bumping into Annabelle again who is also in Bangkok. Going to check into a hostel tomorrow and hopefully leave here on Monday.
Before signing off I would like to thank all the amazing people I met on the Indochina tour, I have had some great laughs with you all and have loved some of the weird and wonderful chat's we have had. I hope we do keep in touch and I see you all again soon.
I'll get some pics up at my next oppurtunity. Hope all is well back in the motherland and miss you all,
Mup
