We set off early for Litchfield National Park because we were unable to book a site and with school holidays and lots of grey nomads wandering around the top end you need to get to unbooked sites before lunch or miss out. Well this applies to most people but every night we were at Litchfield people (mostly back packers) would turn up anytime up until 7.30 p.m. and expect to camp on someone else's site if they had any spare ground around them, then leave the next morning without paying. We did escape these free loaders on two of the nights but a family arrived one night claiming that their car had broken down and the next morning woke us up with a whining child that continued for 3 hours then they cleared out without paying. I think I have discovered that camping can either bring out the best in people or the worst!
On our first afternoon we collected some wood and checked out Buley Rock Pools. The next day we had a visit from David (Steve's brother) and Zeny. They drove down for lunch and we had decided back in Kununura to give them a roast done in a camp oven, this was before we realized that the temperature was going to soar into the mid 30's. It was great to catch up with them and all their news. After lunch we went to look at Florence Falls and the Buley rock Pools and Zeny was thrilled to see some sights around Darwin that she has not seen before.
Our final day at Litchfield was still as hot so we made an early start to the rock pools for a swim then went for a drive to the other end of the Park and Wangi Falls. With school holidays and hot weather all the swimming holes were pretty crowded.
We returned to Katherine yesterday morning thinking it may be a bit cooler but temperatures have hit 40 today and thank goodness the pool at the park we are staying in is large and very well kept. We had a very enjoyable swim this afternoon after visiting some local markets this morning and once again catching up on washing and replenishing some food and drink for the next week or so.
Tomorrow we set off for somewhere along the Stuart Highway before we turn left along the Barkley Highway to Camoweal and then up to Lawn Hill National Park for a couple of days.
Once again we will probably lose Internet contact but we will be in touch when we can.
