We reached Mitchell yesterday after a very early start from Longreach. In fact we broke our record and were on the road by 7.45am.we passed some interesting towns and really liked Barcaldine, it was a town we would like to go back to explore on anther trip. We stopped at Augathella, a sleepy little town, and had some lunch in Meat Ant Park.( it was named after the local footy team and there was a large statue of an ant up a pole in the park)
We arrived in Mitchell late in the afternoon and the caravan park was on the banks of the Maranoa River. The river had been flooded earlier this year and the marker showed the water level had reached well over the bridge beside the park.
We left Mitchell early and drove down a secondary sealed road cross country to
St George this morning. We were surprised how many kangaroos, both dead and alive, we passed on the road and how few cars there were. In parts the road surface was better than the highway. Most of the roads in this area of outback QLD and NSW have been affected by the floods earlier this year.
St George is a thriving town and is known as the inland fishing capital of QLD and is on Steve's list of places to return to. From St George we continued onto Moree and Narrabri, another bustling town and another town for us to return too.
We turned off the Newell Highway just after Narrabri and headed for Gunnedah and our last overnight stop on our journey.
