As we are heading south, we thought we couldn't miss out on Valparaíso with its hills and Unesco World Heritage Site buildings.
The day bus from La Serena to Valpo (as it's known here) allowed us to see the scenery change and become increasingly green. We arrived as the sun was setting. On the trip down we had struck up a conversation with a lovely French couple who had been travelling the world for the past 6 months and who gave us some useful tips for Vietnam. We also discovered that we would be taking the same ferry down to Patagonia.
While checking into our hostel it had become dark already so we had to leave the exploring to the following day. The hostel was a lovely old house with original 19th century furnishings located in Cerro Alegre and run by a very sweet young couple.
Breakfast became an animated political discussion with Chilean, British, American and Australian views expressed (and a few Namibian ones too ~ Chris).
We left our backpacks at the station and spent the day exploring Valpo. Our bus to Pucón only departed in the evening.
Sadly none of the 'ascensores' we saw were working so it meant climbing the hills on foot. We followed the 'Museo a Cielo Abierto' (an open-air museum of abstract murals) to Pablo Neruda's house 'La Sebastiana' which offered interesting insights and even better views of Valpo.
Sadly we had cloudy skies all day and towards the end we were quite glad to escape the cold and try out the cama bus.
Zona Sur we were on our way.
