My European Escapades
After spending an entire night on a charter bus with 49 other tired college students, we arrived at Chestahowa, where the original image of the Black Madonna is located. The image is sometimes attributed to St. Luke, and is a huge devotion for the Polish people. I was priveleged again to lead the music for that Mass, crammed as we were there. After a light lunch and some shopping, we continued to Wadowice, the birthplace of Karol Wojtyla, the man who would become Pope John Paul II. The apartment where he was born has been turned into a museum, of which we got a tour. He lived right across the street from the church, which we stopped to pray in before heading to a local pastry shop where we enjoyed "Pope cakes", a favorite dessert of the pope. That night we arrived in our hostel, a really huge Catholic place. Almost totally exhausted, the four girls I shared a room with talked for a bit, and then discovered the sound of boys playing guitar outside- late at night. So, armed with a flashlight and a temper, we snuck out onto the roof and proceeded to Morse-code flash them and tell them to shut it.
