I am just a couple days in Rio de Janeiro. Staying in the area of Fatima, close to Lapa and Santa Teresa. It feels good to be there as I have a feeling I am more part of brazilian culture than in one of the beach hostels. I am lucky apparently...the weather has been really good..no rain, blues sky and a minimal of 35 degrees. Yesterday it was apparently 40 degrees!!! Last couple of days have been trying to get myself organised which means shopping for food, getting a phone and Rio sim card (chip they call it here...pronounce:chipee! Like pingee pongee...that is table tennis in Brazilian Portuguese!), getting to know the area especially Santa Teresa. I am surprised that my portuguese is still working after 25 years! Had a very nice dinner yesterday all the way up in Santa Teresa...spectacular view of the city and interesting restaurant...almost felt like I was in Asia..better to say in Bali! Slowly trying to build a social life here in Rio. Facebook is a great help! Today I will be introduced to some of the projects run by IBISS. Still not completely sure what will be my task in the next 1.5 months. We will see. This weekend going to see the beach..probably Leblon as a friends lives there. Of course there is still a lot of things to do and see...drink a caiperinha, go to the Corcovado, go to Samba school, see some live music, visit Ilha Grande...I guess I will be busy next to the volunteer work!
