Preparing to leave Melk on bicycle
We rode bikes from Melk to Durnstein, a trip about 17 miles while the boat sailed down the river. It rained most of the first half of the ride and it was cold, so not too many pictures were taken. It stopped raining on the second half and we rode right through the middle of vineyards with grapevines in the Wachau Valley. The Moravians that settled in Winston-Salem most likely felt that the landscape in the back country of North Carolina, with its nearby mountains, local waterways including the Dan River, the Yadkin River, Town Fork Creek and three forks of Muddy Creek, and its fertile land with abundant forest, resembled this Wachau region in central Europe.
