We travelled to Gibraltar in the morning. Before entering you have to cross the border. It is a very strange place. It is like a Spanish town trying to be British. You just can't believe it, especially as the weather is so nice!
Our hostel left a lot to be desired. It cost us the most out of all of our hostels! This is because it's the only one in Gibraltar (supply vs demand). We were waiting for someone to check us in for 1hr30 mins which was very frustrating. The room was basic with a plug socket hanging out the wall and tiny little bunk beds. The irony of the fact in the hallway was a certificate from saying 'best hostel in Gibraltar' made us laugh. Remember 1. It's the only hostel in Gibratar 2. It was a pretty poor hostel.
We had a great afternoon though. In total we walked 17 miles during the day. The tourist office staff rolled their eyes as we asked them about waking up the Gibraltar rock and told usit was long and hard. We decided to ignore their advice and tackle the walk. It was very hot but we didn't regret it.
The views were amazing and the monkeys which we found at the top were very cute.
However the first one we encountered spooked Nicola so much she ran almost as fast as Bolt but in a Mr Bean style in the opposite direction down the hill, which she regretted when she did calmed down. Half an hour later she was practically having a photo shoot with the monkeys.
We also saw one monkey steal a woman's bag which caused a big commotion, it was quite funny. She did manage to get her bag back but only once the monkey was sure there was no food in it.
We walked to the peninsula and saw Africa. Very faint, because it was quite cloudy.
Then we went in search of the beach to cool down. The roads were hard to navigate and it seemed almost impossible to reach the beach. Finally we made it and swam in the sea whilst the sun was setting.
Nicola was not keen to get back to our hostel so we walked back slowly, it was also partly to do with the fact we had walked a long that day already.
When we finally reached the hostel we spent the rest of the evening talkinh to two Dane guys, learning about Denmark and playing card games.

Caryn Good to see that you have remembered some of your Economics!! You must have been exhausted after all that walking in the heat. The views and those cute monkeys made it all worthwhile I'm sure. Bet you enjoyed your swim when you finally got to the beach. I agree, Gibralter is an odd place - a mini Britain in Spain. Hopefully you had some English money?
Daf I remember when mum and I went to Gibraltar (we had a hire car) we also found it a bit of an odd place (red post boxes, telephone boxes, but as far as I remember driving was on the right. When we got to the beach we had to keep moving up as we were in the shade of the rock. Nice to see the monkeys are still resident and as cheeky as ever. Shame about the YH but it sounds like they have the monopoly. Keep on enjoying yourself and hopefully Nicola will enjoy her last few days. xxx
